Subaru has officially revealed the all-new 2026 Outback at the 2025 New York International Auto Show, showcasing the seventh generation of SUV and celebrating the 30th anniversary of the nameplate. Subaru Outback has been known for its rugged capability and adventurous spirit, generating sales of over 3 million units in the US alone.

For the 2026 model year, Subaru has made several updates to make the Outback SUV even more commanding, offering Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, a more practical design, and rugged utility. It also incorporates bold new styling, upgraded technology, advanced safety features, and increased comfort compared to previous generations. Scheduled to arrive in the showroom in late 2025, the new Outback will be available in six trims: Premium, Limited, Touring, Limited XT, Touring XT, and Wilderness.
Adventure-Friendly Exterior Design
The exterior of the 2026 Subaru Outback has undergone a complete redesign to give it a stronger and more rugged profile. It gets a larger grille, upright front fascia, and vertically stacked headlights. On the side, it maintains a boxier silhouette and wider rear roof pillars for durability, while standard raised roof rails add to its 800-pound static load capacity.

On the rear, the SUV features a steeper rear glass angle for increased cargo room and also boasts a new taillight design that further enhances its wide stance. The availability of scratch-resistant cladding ensures protection during off-road adventures.
Upgraded & Practical Interior
Subaru has made significant upgrades to the 2026 Outback SUV’s cabin, featuring a clean dashboard layout with premium materials and eco-friendly touches. The automaker has stated that interior components, such as headliner inserts, are made from recycled plastic bottles. Additionally, the new Outback is more spacious than previous models, offering 34.6 cubic feet of cargo space and increased headroom for all passengers. Features such as utility hooks, a configurable tonneau cover, and wider bottle holders make it both functional and practical.
To make the long-distance journey more comfortable, Subaru has introduced new low-fatigue seats. In terms of technology, the all-new 12.1-inch Subaru Multimedia touchscreen and a 12.3-inch fully digital gauge cluster are featured, along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as an upgraded hybrid navigation system that combines cloud-based and onboard data for quick and accurate routing.

Drivers also have the option to rely on cloud-based voice recognition for hands-free controls. The updated digital cluster provides multiple views, including Calm Mode to minimize distraction and a map-focused display for navigation.
2026 Subaru Outback Safety Features
The new Outback is equipped with the newest generation of EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, which now features three forward-facing cameras and radar sensors for enhanced object detection capabilities. The upgraded safety suite includes emergency stop assist with safe lane selection, hands-free highway assist, pre-curve speed control, a wide-angle camera, and haptic steering wheel feedback.
New Subaru Powertrain & Performance
To maintain its adventurous DNA, the 2026 Subaru Outback features 8.7 inches of ground clearance, with a higher figure on the Wilderness trim. It offers two engine options: a 2.5-liter Boxer engine that produces 180 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque, and a 2.4-liter turbocharged Boxer engine (offered in XT and Wilderness trims) that produces 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. Both engine options are paired with Lineartronic CVT, an 8-speed manual shift model, and Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system.
There is also an updated X-MODE system that can be toggled through the steering wheel, as well as an upgraded AWD system for improved traction and cornering. For sharper handling, Subaru has borrowed the steering setup from its WRX. For the first time, the automaker has offered 19-inch wheels on select trims, while the Wilderness trim gets 17-inch wheels with chunky all-terrain tyres.
