According to a statement emailed to the Detroit Free Press, the move is intended to make “temporary adjustments to production to align to market dynamics.” The vehicles affected are the GMC Hummer EV and the Cadillac Escalade IQ.
This shutdown follows on the heels of a similar move in April, where 200 jobs were temporarily cut due to low market demand. In that case, GM also included the EV versions of the Sierra and Silverado pickup trucks.
Essentially, it looks like consumer demand for big EV trucks is softer than projected. A Hummer EV or the full-size electric Escalade are both niche products built to impress, so it’s perhaps unsurprising that the sales numbers aren’t huge. Still, while GM moves seven times as many regular Escalades each month than it does the EV version, sales of the IQ are at least fairly steady, about 600 per month for the first half of the year.
It’s perhaps a bigger issue that the Sierra and Silverado EVs combined sales are about the same as that of the Hummer EV. The Ford Lightning EV pickup sells far better, but it has not been without its stumbles.
With GM’s volume-selling EVs, the Equinox and Blazer, both being built in Mexico, executives must surely be looking at the excess production supply in Detroit, and perhaps reconsidering past strategies.GMC

The shift shutdown is expected to impact 360 workers at present; the factory employs a total of 4000 people. It’s not great news to receive on the runup to the holiday weekend that celebrates the American labor movement.

The zenith of the Model Y lineup is returning, with Tesla launching an updated version of the Model Y Performance for the current generation. Compared with the outgoing version, the new one has improved performance along with new front and rear fascias. A carbon-fiber spoiler at the rear reportedly adds more downforce and reduces drag.
Beyond the bodywork, the new Model Y Performance borrows the Model 3 Performance’s adaptive dampers that change based on driving style, speed, and road conditions. The track width is staggered, with the Model Y Performance riding on a new set of 21-inch wheels.Tesla
The updated Model Y Performance arrives as a follow-up to last year’s overhaul of the Model 3 Performance. As with every Tesla that wears the Performance badge, the on-paper statistics are impressive. It’ll do zero-to-62 mph in 3.5 seconds; 60 mph arrives in a claimed 3.3 seconds. Find a long stretch of (closed) road and it’ll top out at 155 mph.
Tesla doesn’t like to give out specifics, so we don’t know the battery’s exact capacity, but the rather forgiving European WLTP range estimates put it at 360 miles, just four shy of the all-wheel-drive Long Range model. Inside the updated version, the Performance model gets a new 16-inch display, up from 15.4 inches. Tesla says the new screen has a higher pixel density and will remain exclusive to the Performance trim. The interior gets a bit sportier as well, thanks to a new set of front seats that come with additional bolstering.
Tesla is launching the updated Model Y Performance in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East first, with deliveries planned to start in September. There hasn’t been any news yet on what the North American version will look like or when we should expect it to arrive, but we don’t think we’ll have to wait long to see it.

The redesigned seventh-generation Subaru Forester debuted for the 2025 model year, but its off-road-oriented Wilderness trim had to wait to get the same transformation. That new version arrives as a 2026 model, but it comes with a higher price tag than its predecessor.
The 2026 Subaru Forester Wilderness starts at $39,835. That’s $2130 more than the 2025 model, which, admittedly, didn’t have the new design and features found on the new one. Along with riding on a different platform, the fresh Wilderness has taller tires and a higher ride height. It’s not offered with the hybrid powertrain that’s available on other Forester models. Instead, the Wilderness features a 180-hp 2.5-liter flat-four engine paired with a CVT and all-wheel drive (naturally).

For those who are interested in the non-Wilderness-spec Forester, prices have barely budged for the majority of the lineup. A nominal $30 hike applies to the $31,445 base model through the top-of-the-line $43,045 Touring. The Premium, Sport, and Limited trims slot between those and start at $34,835, $37,555, and, $39,145, respectively. For 2026, every model with a blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert also now has lane-keeping assist.
Subaru hasn’t yet released pricing for the hybrid 2026 Forester models. However, that info should be announced soon. The company says the first ’26 examples should begin arriving at dealerships sometime this fall.

Concept cars lead unusual lives. After a glamorous spin on the turntables at an auto show, many end up stashed away in a warehouse, dusty and forgotten, and some even get crushed, remembered only through photos. A lucky few earn a spot in a museum, on display to demonstrate the dreams of a bygone era. Recently, the Klairmont Kollections Automotive Museum in Chicago shut down. Its collection of nearly 300 cars is set to be sold off this month by Mecum Auctions, giving car enthusiasts the rare chance to acquire two intriguing concept cars: the 1982 Dodge Turbo Charger and the 2002 Lincoln Continental concept.
A Functional Wedge

While many concept cars are simply static models, and the ones that do move are typically limited to slow speeds, the Dodge Turbo Charger stands out as a fully drivable concept that was kept busy. As the paintwork along the side skirts and orange siren atop the roof indicate, the Turbo Charger served as a pace car for the PPG Indy Car World Series, driving ahead of the field of open-wheeled race cars—piloted by legends from Mario Andretti to Al Unser and A.J. Foyt—before the green flag dropped.
Based on the fifth-generation Charger, built from 1981 to 1987 as a front-wheel-drive coupe, the Turbo Charger concept adopted sleek wedge-shaped bodywork with aerodynamic appendages, including a substantial rear wing and fairings over the rear wheels. The car originally wore a silver and red livery, as seen in this video of the 1982 Budweiser Cleveland 500, before later being repainted with blue accents.Mecum Auctions
Underneath the sheetmetal was the turbocharged 2.2-liter inline-four that would later appear in the production-spec Charger, mated to a five-speed manual transmission. No performance figures were ever released for the concept, but the turbocharged engine produced 142 horsepower and 160 pound-feet of torque when it arrived in the Charger for 1984. Car and Driver reviewed a 146-hp 1985 Shelby-tuned Charger Turbo, which had a claimed zero-to-60-mph time of 7.6 seconds.
While the powertrain remained stock, Dodge fitted the concept with beefier brakes and a wider track in the front and rear. The suspension was also reworked to improve handling, since the Turbo Charger was designed to be chased by a pack of amped-up Indy Car drivers raring to go racing.Mecum Auctions
Gullwing doors and NACA ducts just ahead of the rear doors added visual drama, while the cabin was decked out with Recaro race seats with full harnesses and a roll cage. The row of dials along the dashboard drew inspiration from airplanes. While the Turbo Charger’s streamlined look never made it to production, the concept serves as an intriguing piece of American motorsports history that might still run with a bit of elbow grease.
A Lincoln with the Heart of an Aston Martin

From the 1940s until 2002, the Lincoln lineup was topped by the distinguished Continental sedan. Years of declining sales saw Lincoln’s flagship get discontinued, but at the 2002 Los Angeles auto show, the American automaker hinted at a return for the Continental with a large, handsome concept. The nameplate wouldn’t end up being revived until 2017, but the 2002 concept ended up previewing the design language that would appear on cars like the 2006 Zephyr (renamed the MKZ the following year) and the 2007 MKX SUV.
The concept carried an air of importance, with upright bodywork and plenty of chrome, including a strip that ran from the lower front bumper, up over the fender, and down the entire shoulder line of the car to the taillights. At the rear, the Continental features a wild split-tailgate trunk, with the top section lifting upwards and the bottom section sliding out like a drawer. There was even a set of silver metal luggage that nearly fit into the trunk like a puzzle. Inside, the concept had a mix of tan leather and silver metal accents, with a spacious rear seat and a fold-out table and television.
While the Continental concept’s legacy was in its styling, the body-on-frame car also packed a pretty neat powertrain. Ford, Lincoln’s parent company at the time, also owned Aston Martin, so the Continental featured a 6.0-liter V-12 borrowed from the British sports-car specialist, sending 414 horsepower through a six-speed automatic gearbox to the rear wheels.Mecum AuctionsMecum Auctions
Both the 1982 Dodge Turbo Charger and 2002 Lincoln Continental concept will be auctioned off by Mecum at the Klairmont Kollections Automotive Museum from September 19 to 21. There are no estimates for what prices the two concepts will command, but all lots are being offered at no reserve, giving automotive enthusiasts the chance to snag a unique piece of history for potentially very little.
Used Car Prices Have Been Climbing for 5 Months Now

- The industry watchers at iSeeCars.com report that used-car prices in the U.S. have gone up for five months in a row after declining in previous years.
- The average used-car price is now almost 4 percent higher than in July 2024, at just under $32,000.
- Used EVs are the exception, with Tesla prices particularly hard hit.
According to the folks at iSeeCars.com, used‑car prices are continuing to surge, steadily reversing a two-and-a-half-year slide, even as electric‑vehicle values—especially Teslas—start to level off.
In its latest crunching of about 1.5 million privately sold 1‑ to 5‑year‑old vehicles, iSeeCars found that the average used car now costs $31,770—a jump of 3.7 percent (about $1146) over July 2024.
This marks the fifth consecutive month of rising prices, following declines as recent as August 2024. Prices increased 1 percent in March, 1.8 percent in April, 2.0 percent in May, and nearly 4.8 percent in June.
“Consumer demand for used cars remains strong, outstripping supply and driving prices up,” said Karl Brauer, executive analyst at iSeeCars, noting that rising new‑car prices and concerns over tariffs have steered more buyers toward the used market.
Not Universal
Used electric vehicle prices are still falling, though the rate of decline is slowing. After plunging 8.8 percent in May and 4.8 percent in June, used EV prices dropped only 1.3 percent in July—marking the shallowest year‑over‑year decline in more than two years.

Even within the EV segment, Tesla models posted some of the steepest losses—falling 5.3 percent in July—while Chevrolet and Chrysler saw declines about half that. At the brand level, Infiniti bucked the trend, gaining 11.7 percent in value over the same period.
Downs and Ups
On the other end of the spectrum, models such as the BMW 4-series delivered the largest gains, with a remarkable 30 percent increase year over year, according to iSeeCars.
As Brauer explains, “Just as used electric vehicle prices are stabilizing, traditional used cars are going back up in value.” He added that “high new car prices, plus concern over tariffs . . . is likely leading to increased near‑term demand for both new and used vehicles.”
