771-HP Bentley Flying Spur with Hybrid V-8 Debuts on September 10

Bentley’s opulent four-door sedan is set for a facelift that will pack the same PHEV punch as the brand’s redesigned grand tourer.

  • The Bentley Flying Spur is getting a facelift that includes a heart transplant.
  • The Flying Spur is adding the same plug-in-hybrid V-8 powertrain as the refreshed Continental GT.
  • The new unit pairs the combustion engine with an electric motor and 25.9-kWh battery to produce 771 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque.

UPDATE 9/3/2024: Bentley today released a new teaser photo of the upcoming Flying Spur, which the company also announced will be revealed on Tuesday, September 10. This news comes after Bentley confirmed back in July that the new Flying Spur will feature its 771-hp plug-in-hybrid V-8 powertrain.

We’ve known about Bentley’s plans to kill off the W-12 for a while now, but we haven’t known how those plans would affect the Flying Spur—until now. The automaker has announced a facelifted version of the extravagant sedan that includes the new plug-in-hybrid V-8 from the refreshed Continental GT.

The powertrain, which Bentley calls the “Ultra Performance Hybrid,” combines a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 that peaks at 584 horsepower with a 187-hp electric motor squashed between the engine and the eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The two combine for a total output of 771 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque.Bentley

The electric motor sources its power from a 25.9-kWh battery, which is claimed to provide up to 51 miles of EV-only driving range based on the rather optimistic European WLTP test cycle. That’s likely closer to 40 miles using the EPA’s methodology. In the Conti, the electric motor can propel the car at speeds up to 87 mph using electricity alone, though that may change for the Flying Spur.

If all of these figures seem familiar to you, that’s because they are. On top of powering the refreshed Continental GT, the mighty PHEV powertrain has been making the rounds throughout the greater Volkswagen Group’s production facilities. The recently announced plug-in-hybrid Lamborghini Urus SE uses a slightly more powerful version of the same setup, while Porsche just announced a new Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid with the same system.Bentley

Not much else is known about the facelifted Flying Spur beyond the powertrain. The manufacturer released a single teaser image of the new car showcasing a slightly revised front end. Bentley promises to reveal more information “in due course,” so we’ll have to sit tight until then.

By hounding his college professors at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, he was able to travel Wisconsin seeking out stories in the auto world before landing his dream job at Car and Driver. His new goal is to delay the inevitable demise of his 2010 Volkswagen Golf.

The Track-Focused Apollo Hypercar Is Coming, but Only for 10 Lucky Buyers

The follow-up to the Intensa Emozione, the Apollo Evo, packs an 800-hp V-12 . . . in a 2900-pound car.By Fred SmithPublished: Sep 11, 2025bookmarksSave Article

In another world, the Gumpert Apollo could have sat alongside the Koenigsegg CC and Pagani Zonda lines as the origin points for decades of beloved hypercars to come. Instead, the brand and its one-time record setter faded into irrelevance after a 2013 bankruptcy. A successor company, Apollo, carried on with the oddly named Intensa Emozione in the late 2010s. Now, that Apollo has its successor.Apollo

This is the Apollo Evo, a limited-run track hypercar meant to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Apollo predecessor Gumpert. It is billed as a follow-up to the Intensa Emozione, although its status as a track car puts it in competition with very different vehicles than the road-focused IE hypercar.

Apollo says that the car’s racing-style central monocoque weighs just 364 pounds, part of a 2866-pound package that goes from a standstill to 60 miles per hour in 2.7 seconds. A 6.3-liter V-12 producing 800 horsepower provides the propulsion, which can get the car to a claimed 208-mph top speed. Unlike other racers that might be riding on slicks, the Apollo Evo does all of this on Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires.Apollo

The modern hypercar market is very different from the one the Gumpert Apollo once debuted into, and even the market for cars produced just for track use has become substantial. Major brands like Aston Martin, Bugatti, and Ferrari all offer Le Mans–inspired machines for dedicated track use. All three of those cars have more impressive performance benchmarks and more serious connections to major racing programs, but they are missing something Apollo is offering: exclusivity. Just 10 Evos will be built, making the new car a rarity even in the world of ultra-specialized track cars.

2026 Mercedes-AMG E53 Wagon Costs a Lot Less Than an Audi RS6 Avant

AMG’s mighty plug-in hybrid longroof E-class has up to 604 hp, and it can go 41 miles on electricity alone.By Eric StaffordPublished: Sep 11, 2025bookmarksSave Article

  • The Mercedes-AMG E53 wagon will go on sale sometime this fall, and the 2026 model starts at $94,500.
  • The new 2026 E53 wagon is about $28K less than the last E63 S wagon, and it’s about $33K less than the similarly mighty Audi RS6 Avant.
  • The E53 has a plug-in hybrid powertrain that pairs a turbo 3.0-liter straight-six with an electric motor, making up to 604 hp, and it has 41 miles of EV range.

New station wagons are in short supply, and some of the few that you can still buy ain’t what they used to be. Take the new 2026 Mercedes-AMG E53 wagon, for instance. It makes up to 604(!) horsepower, and that comes from a newfangled plug-in hybrid powertrain. That kind of power doesn’t come cheap, though, as the AMG-spec longroof E-class has a base price that approaches the six-figure mark.

When the ’26 E53 wagon goes on sale sometime this fall, it’ll have a starting price of $94,500. That’s a $3750 upcharger versus its mechanically identical sedan counterpart. And while the AMG wagon’s price certainly isn’t chump change, it’s a lot less than some of its similarly powerful competitors; the 621-hp Audi RS6 Avant starts at around $128,000. For AMG fans who want a high-powered wagon, the E53 variant actually lowers the cost of entry compared with the outgoing-generation E63 S wagon, which started at $122,250 for the 2023 model year.

View Interior PhotosMercedes-AMG

Just like the E53 sedan, its wagon sibling’s plug-in powertrain pairs a turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six with a single electric motor. The system is typically good for 533 horsepower and 577 pound-feet of torque. However, activating its Race mode raises its peak output to 604 horses. The PHEV setup also includes a 21-kWh battery pack, and Mercedes says it will provide 41 miles of electric-only range.

While the 2026 Mercedes-AMG E53 wagon’s base price is a relative bargain compared with its Audi rival, rest assured that the Merc’s bottom line will rise on higher Exclusive and Pinnacle trims as well as with the amount of optional add-ons. We don’t yet have individual prices for these extras, but the list includes larger wheels, a driver-assist package, various appearance packages, Multicontour Seats, and an available Superscreen.

Eric Stafford’s automobile addiction began before he could walk, and it has fueled his passion to write news, reviews, and more for Car and Driver since 2016. His aspiration growing up was to become a millionaire with a Jay Leno–like car collection. Apparently, getting rich is harder than social-media influencers make it seem, so he avoided financial success entirely to become an automotive journalist and drive new cars for a living. After earning a journalism degree at Central Michigan University and working at a daily newspaper, the years of basically burning money on failed project cars and lemon-flavored jalopies finally paid off when Car and Driver hired him.
